Kapolei has changed dramatically over the years.
What was once a much smaller community on the west side of Oahu has grown into a place filled with new homes, restaurants, shopping, schools, businesses, and entertainment. For many West Oahu families, there are now more reasons than ever to stay close to home instead of driving into town.
For Hawaii Towing Company, the story of Kapolei is personal.
We don’t only provide Kapolei towing services. Kapolei has been home to us since 2011. We have watched the community grow, driven these roads countless times, eaten at the local restaurants, and served the people who live and work here.
This is the Kapolei we remember and the growing community we are proud to call home.
Kapolei Was Built to Become Oahu’s Second City
Kapolei did not become a major West Oahu community by accident.
For decades, the area was planned as Oahu’s “second city,” giving residents another center for homes, jobs, government services, shopping, and business outside of urban Honolulu.
Anyone who has watched Kapolei develop can see that vision taking shape.
Residential communities expanded. Shopping centers opened. Businesses moved west. Roads became busier, and places that once seemed far away from everything slowly became part of a growing city.
By the 2010 Census, Kapolei had 15,186 residents now as of 2026 the population is estimated to be approximately 24,844.
But numbers only tell part of the story.
If you have lived on the west side for years, you can see the difference simply by driving around.
Ko Olina and Some of Our Favorite West Oahu Memories
You can’t talk about the growth of the Kapolei area without mentioning Ko Olina.
Development of Ko Olina began taking shape decades ago. In 1988, developer Herbert Horita broke ground on major infrastructure that included roadways, a golf course, and the four man-made lagoons that are now one of the area’s most recognizable features.
The Ihilani Resort opened in December 1993 on the property that is now home to the Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina. Marriott’s Ko Olina Beach Club followed in 2003, and Disney’s Aulani Resort opened in 2011.
But for our family, Ko Olina isn’t just about resorts and development.
Ko Olina Beach has always been one of our family’s go-to places.
The calm lagoons made it an easy place to relax and enjoy the water. More importantly, it was close to home. We didn’t always have to plan an entire beach day in advance. Sometimes we could decide at the last minute to head over to Ko Olina simply to catch the sunset.
Those spontaneous evenings are some of the simple things that make living on the west side special.
Having places like Ko Olina nearby reminds us that one of the best parts of calling Kapolei home is still being able to slow down and enjoy where we live.
Remembering an Earlier Kapolei
There was a time when Kapolei had far fewer choices than it does today.
As more development started coming into the area, places like the Marketplace at Kapolei, Home Depot, and the old Big Kmart became familiar parts of life on the west side.
For us, some of the strongest memories are much simpler.
Food is one of them.
Our family has always loved sushi. Genki Sushi was one of our favorites, but we would also regularly eat at Sushi Bay and Kazoku Sushi. These weren’t just places to grab something to eat. They became part of our routine and some of the places we came to associate with living in Kapolei.
Back then, there simply weren’t as many choices as there are today.
Now, Kapolei has grown into a completely different dining community. New restaurants and eateries continue to open, giving West Oahu families more choices without having to make the drive into town.
It is one of the small things that really shows just how much Kapolei has changed.
Kapolei Has Become a Place to Eat, Shop and Explore
One of the best parts about watching Kapolei grow has been seeing how many new choices West Oahu families have close to home.
Restaurants and eateries have continued to arrive. Places such as Island Vintage Coffee is one of our favorite spots to circle. Their coffee captures an essence of Hawaii, Rich and smooth! They’ve also created a casual but beautiful dining area experience that locals love. Its a bit elevated than your normal cafe when you want to slow down a little more. And the flavors don’t disappoint! Places like Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, Mensho Hawaii and Scratch Kitchen are other great places and examples of how different today’s Kapolei feels from the Kapolei of years ago.
There is always somewhere new to eat or something different to discover.
For families living on the west side, that growth matters.
Instead of having to drive toward Honolulu every time you want more choices for dining, shopping, or entertainment, much more is available right here in Kapolei.
That is one of the changes we appreciate most.
New Communities Continue to Change West Oahu
The growth doesn’t stop with restaurants and shopping.
New communities such as Hoʻopili have brought thousands of new homes to the greater Kapolei and Ewa region. The development surrounding the rail corridor has also changed areas that looked completely different not that long ago.
UH West Oʻahu has become another major part of the community.
New homes, students, businesses, transportation, and development continue to bring more people into this part of the island.
For someone who has watched these areas develop over the years, the transformation is hard to miss.
Places that once felt open and undeveloped are now neighborhoods where families are building their lives.
Towing in Kapolei Gives Us Another View of the Community
Running Hawaii Towing Company allows us to experience Kapolei in a way that most residents probably don’t.
We meet people when their day has suddenly gone wrong.
Maybe their car won’t start. Maybe they were involved in an accident. Perhaps their vehicle broke down on the way to work, while running errands, or while trying to get home to their family.
Towing in Kapolei is much like towing throughout the rest of West Oahu. However, one thing continues to stand out to us: the people.
Over the years, we have met so many friendly and kind people while providing towing services in Kapolei.
Even during stressful situations, we still get to experience the aloha spirit that makes Hawaii’s communities special.
Those interactions matter to us.
A tow may simply be another service call on paper, but there is a real person behind every call. They have somewhere they need to be, someone waiting for them, or a problem they weren’t expecting to deal with that day.
That is why we try to treat people the way we would want our own family treated.

Hawaii Towing Company has provided towing and roadside assistance across Oahu for more than 15 years.

It is interesting to think about what Kapolei looked like years ago compared with what we see today.
The restaurants have changed.
The neighborhoods have expanded.
More businesses have arrived.
More families have moved west.
UH West Oʻahu has grown, new communities have been built, and areas that once seemed empty are now filled with homes and activity.
Kapolei will probably continue changing.
For those of us who have lived here for years, there will always be things we remember about the old Kapolei. At the same time, there is something exciting about watching the community continue to develop.
Most importantly, through all that growth, we still get to meet the friendly and kind people who make West Oahu feel like home.

Our connection to Kapolei goes beyond operating a towing company.
Kapolei has been home to us since 2011.
That gives us two very different perspectives on the city’s growth. We experience Kapolei as residents, but we also experience it from behind the wheel of a tow truck.
And from our perspective, much of the change has been positive.
The growth gives West Oahu families more places to shop, eat, find entertainment, work, attend school, and spend time together without always having to travel toward town.
Yes, there are more people.
Yes, there are more cars.
And yes, the roads can certainly feel busier.
But there is also much more available to the families who call this side of the island home.
We have called Kapolei home for over 10 years, and it has been a pleasure watching the community grow. It has been an even greater pleasure serving the people who live here.

Kapolei may look very different from the city we remember years ago, but the people and the sense of community are still a big part of what makes West Oahu special.
